Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has reiterated his commitment to transforming Zamfara into a commercial hub in northern Nigeria. Speaking on Thursday, Governor Lawal highlighted the state’s ambitious plans during the official launch of the Gusau International Airport construction by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo.
A statement from the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, outlined that the Gusau airport project aims to create a ‘smart airport’ capable of handling both domestic and international flights. The project will feature a 3.4-kilometre primary runway, runway lighting, and navigational aids to accommodate large commercial aircraft.
Governor Lawal emphasised his administration’s dedication to making Zamfara a prime investment destination, attracting both local and international investors. “The airport will feature a modern terminal building with advanced passenger facilities, including automated baggage handling systems and Customs and Immigration services,” said Lawal. He also highlighted the inclusion of an air traffic control tower with state-of-the-art communication and surveillance systems.
Additional infrastructure will include maintenance hangars, fire and rescue stations, fuel storage facilities, access roads, parking facilities, and comprehensive utility systems. The airport will also boast a cargo wing and enhanced landscaping to improve its aesthetic appeal.
“The Gusau airport project is intended to be a smart airport designed to accommodate domestic and international flights, providing a critical gateway for the state and the entire region,” Lawal added. “This will facilitate easier and more efficient travel, promoting social interaction, business, and tourism.”
Governor Lawal stressed the economic benefits of the airport, citing its potential to improve the ease of doing business and social interactions in Zamfara. He pointed out that the airport would open direct air access to the state, easing the challenges faced by local businesses in exporting and importing goods.
Minister Festus Keyamo acknowledged the historical oversight of Zamfara’s infrastructure needs, especially given its status as an agricultural hub. He emphasised the airport’s significance beyond commercial viability, describing it as a crucial social amenity for the people.
“Looking around today, I am convinced that the state is fully ready for this development,” said Keyamo. He expressed his hope to see Hajj operations launched from the new airport next year, alleviating the longstanding difficulties faced by Zamfara’s pilgrims.
