Anambra, Gombe record highest intercity bus fare in Sept

Anambra and Gombe states recorded the highest intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare) with N9,587.27, followed by N8,330.05 in September 2024.

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its Transport Fare Watch for September 2024 released yesterday, said the lowest fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,579.42, followed by Ebonyi with N5,611.06. Zamfara State recorded the highest bus journey fare within the city (per drop constant route).

The report stated that the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop increased by 3.45 per cent from N869.35 in August 2024 to N899.31 in September 2024. On a year-on-year basis, it declined by 32.38 per cent from N1,329.94 in September 2023.

The report covers the following categories: bus journeys within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity (state route) charge per person; air fare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and waterway passenger transport.

In another category, the report noted that the average fare paid by commuters for intercity bus journeys per drop was N7,175.06 in September 2024, indicating an increase of 0.22 per cent on a month-on-month basis compared to N7,159.00 in August 2024. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 21.26 per cent from N5,917.16 in September 2023.

For air travel, the report stated that the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey was N124,693.40 in September 2024, showing an increase of 0.80 per cent compared to the previous month (August 2024). On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 57.81 per cent from N79,013.48 in September 2023.

The average transport fare paid for Okada transportation was N532.00 in September 2024, reflecting an increase of 1.48 per cent compared with August 2024 (N524.22). On a year-on-year basis, the fare decreased by 26.04 per cent compared with September 2023 (N719.26).

For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the report stated that the average fare paid in September 2024 was N1,468.23, indicating an increase of 1.30 per cent on a monthly basis. On a year-on-year basis, it increased by 4.36 per cent from N1,406.84 in September 2023.

Adamawa recorded the lowest fare with N443.17, followed by Abia with N458.00. Similarly, the report stated that Abuja recorded the highest air transport charges (for specified routes single journeys) with N129,600.00, followed by Anambra with N129,045.53.

Conversely, Zamfara recorded the lowest fare with N96,969.78, followed by Ekiti with N120,555.37.

The report also noted that Lagos State had the highest motorcycle transport fare in September 2024 with N927.07, followed by Ondo with N766.61. Anambra recorded the lowest fare with N318.95, followed by Bayelsa with N319.01.

Similarly, water transport fare was highest in Bayelsa with N4,573.16, followed by Delta with N4,268.10, while the lowest fare was recorded in Borno with N471.01, followed by Gombe with N628.74.

In the zonal analysis for September 2024, bus journey fares within the city were highest in the South-West with N933.10, followed by the South-South with N928.33, while the South-East recorded the lowest with N861.45.

For intercity bus journeys, the South-South had the highest fare with N7,673.87, followed by the South-East with N7,351.05, while the North-Central recorded the lowest with N6,886.06.

In air transportation, the South-West recorded the highest fare with N126,013.30, followed by the South-East with N125,881.64, while the North-West had the lowest with N120,731.25.

Commuters on motorcycles (Okada) paid the highest fare in the South-West with N601.10, followed by the North-East with N561.71, while the South-East recorded the lowest with N492.75.

The South-South zone had the highest fare for water transport with N3,620.23, followed by the South-West with N1,448.54, while the North-East had the lowest with N839.12.
