Banking activities were yesterday paralysed in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, as bankers hurriedly shut their offices to customers, citing robbery cases in two of the commercial banks along Unity Road in the ancient town.

The development, which also involved some community banks in the town, caused pandemonium around the town and its adjoining settlements, as unsuspecting motorists drove recklessly to escape the area.

The rumour, which started around 10 am after a heavy downpour, went virile on social network, making many parents and guardians to make phone calls to their children and wards to be sure of their locations and warned them against passing through the troubled spot.

It would be recalled that a robbery case at a newly opened filling station at Tanke Junction area of the town had allegedly claimed the life of one person.

Yesterday’s development forced many fully armed policemen in the town to patrols along the suspected troubled spot.

A banker, who craved anonymity, said: “Some of our colleagues just called in to intimate us that one commercial bank or two were under siege of the armed robbers. We put a call to the headquarters in Lagos and got a directive to close down with immediate effect.”
