In a region with one of the world’s lowest electrification rates, frequent power outages or a total lack of power supply, arising from the poor state of electricity infrastructure are the order of the day. According to a 2023 World Bank estimate, 220 million people in West Africa live without access to electricity.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has struggled with inadequate power supply for decades. To meet personal obligations and customer demands, many households, and businesses in Nigeria resort to purchasing generating sets to power their properties and equipment. A 2022 power sector report by Stears and Sterling, says over 40 percent of households in Nigeria own and use generators to meet their electricity requirements.
Experts believe that solving Nigeria’s energy deficit would require deliberate – investment, technology, and policy reforms. With more capital investments, governments could provide more reliable electricity connections, fund rural electrification projects, and reduce dependency on costly imported fuels.
Digital Transformation: A game changer for West Africa’s energy and power sector
In the last decade, there has been a growing appetite for the adoption of digital transformation to solve West Africa’s energy deficit. Technology, including renewable energy, battery storage, and other energy-efficient options is fast becoming a game-changer in the region’s fight for reliable and affordable energy. Renewables, for example, could be harnessed across the millions of sun-soaked and wind-rich rural communities to reduce the region’s reliance on fossil fuels.
For nine years, Nigeria Energy has supported the agenda for the digital transformation of the Energy and Power sector in Nigeria and West Africa. Leading stakeholders across the sector have leveraged the platform to explore the latest technological advancements within the industry while participating in conversations that drive significant progress for the sector.
As Nigeria’s energy and power sector continues to grow and evolve, it is crucial for relevant stakeholders to come together and explore new opportunities, technological advancements, and regulatory frameworks. The annual Nigeria Energy conference provides a beacon of hope and strategic collaboration for industry experts, manufacturers, distributors, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders to foster growth and advancement in the sector.
During the conference, stakeholders would typically explore the latest technological advancements within the energy and power industry. With a focus on renewable energy, smart grids, energy storage solutions, and digitalization, the conference serves as a catalyst for innovation, offering opportunities to explore cutting-edge technologies that can enhance efficiency and sustainability across the energy and power sector.
