Burna Boy Describes Nigerians as Collateral Damage

The Afrobeat’s legend, Burna Boy, in an interview describes Nigerians as “collateral damage.”

Grammy-winning star Burna Boy made headlines after a candid interview with Tidal in which he described Nigerians as “collateral damage.” “It never meant to exist” he added. The artist, known for his outspoken views on social and political issues, shared his perspective on Nigeria’s history and current challenges.

In the interview, Burna Boy argued that Nigeria’s existence was a result of a “bad business enterprise” by the British. He likened the country to a company formed to exploit resources, where the people were ultimately the victims. The artist expressed frustration with the country’s internal divisions and the negative impact they have had on its development.

The African Giant stated that most of the challenges faced was as a result of bad deals entered into by our rulers with the British government. He noted that the British government did not mean well for anyone living in the Northern and Southern Areas. Also, these areas were later amalgamated to form Nigeria.

Burna Boy states that Nigeria was known as the Niger Area before the Royal Company acquired it. This was the beginning of our trouble and damages. Our rulers gave our birth rights to the British government even without our consent.

His career

Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, rose to fame in 2012 after releasing Like to Party, the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E. In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Atlantic Records in the United States as well as its parent company Warner Music Group internationally and released Outside, as his third album.

Ever since then, he has been releasing hit singles back-to-back. His newest album is I Told Them. This was released last year’s August 2023. It features chart-topping singles such as City Boys and Sittin’ on Top of the World.
