Tuggar: Remove the log from your eyes

Bala Mohammed attacking Tinubu over presidential ambition - Tuggar
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State

The recent remarks by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, against the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, regarding the latter’s criticism of the tax reform policy, reflect a disconnect from both reality and his responsibilities. Tuggar’s undiplomatic outburst further exposes his desperation to align himself politically, as he lacks substantive achievements in his current role.

Disconnected and Out of Touch
Tuggar’s comments on Bala Mohammed appear to be an attempt to remain politically relevant by targeting the Governor, whose agricultural policies have significantly contributed to Bauchi State’s economic growth. The Governor’s initiatives have created thousands of jobs across the agricultural value chain, empowering farmers and youth through modern farming techniques and innovative programs like the Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP). This initiative has provided training in fish farming, animal husbandry, and cash crop production, benefiting Bauchi’s youth.

Tuggar, a native of Bauchi State, appears disconnected from these realities. If he had spent more time in his home state instead of travelling extensively, he would have seen firsthand the transformation Bala Mohammed has brought to Bauchi. His detachment from grassroots realities and his local government underscore his limited engagement with the people he represents.

Challenges in the Foreign Ministry
Tuggar’s tenure as Foreign Affairs Minister has presented several diplomatic challenges. Under his watch, Nigeria’s foreign policy has faced difficulties, and the country’s standing in international relations has been questioned. Consider the following:

1. ECOWAS Leadership Challenges:
There have been concerns about Nigeria’s role in ECOWAS under Tuggar’s leadership, particularly regarding the Sahel crisis and the withdrawal of key member states like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

2. Strained Relations with Neighbors:
There have been reports of diplomatic tensions affecting Nigeria’s relationships with its Sahelian neighbours, which have contributed to security challenges along the border.

3. Diplomatic Setbacks:
Nigeria has faced diplomatic hurdles, including issues with the United Arab Emirates regarding visa policies, highlighting the complexities of foreign relations management.

4. Foreign Policy Direction:
Nigeria’s foreign policy approach has raised discussions regarding its alignment with global powers and its role in regional diplomacy.

Importance of Agricultural Development
Tuggar’s remarks regarding land use in Bauchi do not fully reflect the reality of agricultural development. The Tiamin Rice Project, a large-scale agricultural initiative, has provided employment opportunities for many Bauchi residents. Large-scale agriculture plays a crucial role in economic development, and it is essential to recognize its benefits.

Furthermore, Tuggar’s statements about federal allocations to Bauchi do not take into account the economic challenges faced by states across Nigeria. Inflation, minimum wage adjustments, and macroeconomic policies have affected state finances. Bala Mohammed’s management of resources has earned him national recognition, including the “Rural Road Infrastructure Governor of the Year 2022” and the “Urban Renewal Governor of the Year 2024.”

Contrast in Leadership
Bala Mohammed has extensive experience in governance, having served as a director in the federal civil service, a senator, and a former FCT Minister. His tenure as FCT Minister was marked by policies such as the Land Swap Programme, which facilitated housing development.

Tuggar, as Foreign Affairs Minister, has focused on international relations, though challenges remain in addressing Nigeria’s diplomatic priorities. It is important for public officials to prioritize service delivery and national development over political rivalries.

The Road Ahead
Public service should be driven by a commitment to the people rather than political manoeuvring. Constructive engagement and collaboration are necessary for addressing national and state-level challenges. Rather than engaging in political disputes, the focus should remain on governance, economic development, and the welfare of Nigerians.
