Chapman is a non-alcoholic cocktail drink across Nigeria, loved for its bright red hue, sweet citrus fizz, and distinct bitter notes. It is simple to mix at home and makes a great pairing with rich, spiced dishes like coconut rice, suya, or grilled meats.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fanta (or orange soda)
  • 1 cup Sprite (or lemon-lime soda)
  • 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 tbsp Grenadine syrup (or Ribena, for colour and sweetness)
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime or lemon juice
  • Ice cubes
  • Cucumber slices, orange slices, lemon or lime wheels, and fresh mint sprigs

Instructions

Fill two large glass mugs or tall tumbler glasses halfway with ice cubes.

Pour equal parts Fanta and Sprite over the ice into each glass.

Stir in the Grenadine syrup (or Ribena) and fresh lime juice until the drink takes on its signature vibrant reddish-pink colour.

Drop 2 to 3 dashes of Angostura bitters into each glass and stir gently to combine without losing the fizz.

Drop cucumber slices and citrus wheels directly into the drink, top with a sprig of fresh mint, and serve immediately with a straw.

Chef’s Tips

Angostura bitters give Chapman its distinct adult flavour profile. If serving kids, simply omit the bitters.

Chill the sodas before mixing so the ice doesn’t melt too quickly and dilute the flavour.

Feel free to toss in chopped apples, strawberries, or pomegranate seeds alongside the traditional cucumber and citrus slices.
