Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies, repositioning Nigeria as the hub of medical supplies for Africa

Amidst the worldwide economic decline and some recent exits from the syringe manufacturing sector in Nigeria, Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Limited, the leading syringe manufacturing company in Nigeria and one of the largest in West Africa, is set to make Nigeria the hub of medical supplies for Nigeria and other African countries. With a state-of-the-art international standard factory and a production capacity of 1.8bn syringes, it has attained ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certification, NAFDAC and Standards Organization of Nigeria certifications.

Mikano International Chairman, Mr. Mofid Karameh, disclosed this information during the press briefing after a closed-door session on Tuesday, 23rd January 2023, with the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Doris Nkiruka Uzo-Anite, along with the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and members of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MEDMAN) in the Federal Capital Territory. He highlighted that Nigeria possesses the capacity to meet the United Nations’ annual requirement of 40% of syringes and needles for other African countries.

Mrs. Uzoka-Anite emphasized the Federal Government’s support for MEDMAN, restating President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to eliminating obstacles hindering industrialization and manufacturing in Nigeria. The honourable minister expressed the Federal Government’s intention to introduce a backward integration model which would be presented to the Federal Executive Council for approval. She is confident that this approach will optimize MEDMAN for full-scale production of medical supplies in Nigeria.
Responding to the press, Dr. Alausa stated that the repositioning of the syringe and needles production in Nigeria would ensure only needles and syringes of high quality produced by Nigerians are in the market; in addition, this would lead to the creation of well-paying jobs for Nigerians.

Speaking on behalf of Afrimedical, the Managing Director, Mr. Akin Oyediran, said the Federal Government’s support to prohibit the importation of syringes is a welcome decision as it will protect the local manufacturers, promote the industry in Nigeria and curb the rate of importing substandard syringes that are not fit for use in the originating countries but dumped in Nigeria, putting the health of our citizens at risk.
