A commercial bus driver, Ibrahim Suberu has threatened legal action against the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) over alleged abuse of power and unlawful detention of a Volkswagen Transporter belonging to him.

According to a letter dated March 10, 2024, addressed to the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) at NAF headquarters in Abuja, counsel to Suberu, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo accused the Air Force of professional misconduct and abuse of power.

Omirhorbo said the incident occurred on November 2, 2023, when Suberu, a commercial bus driver, was involved in a motor accident with the wife of Air Force Marshal, Cletus Udeagulu.

The letter alleged that after the accident, the Air Force officials intervened swiftly, detaining Suberu and impounding his vehicle at the Legico Barracks in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Suberu claimed that he was harassed, molested and intimidated by Air Force personnel, leading to distress and financial hardship as he has been unable to work since his vehicle was impounded.

The letter demands the immediate release of Suberu’s vehicle and payment of ₦100 million as damages within seven days, adding that failure to comply will result in legal action against the Air Force.

The letter reads in part: “As a result of the actions of your officers at the instance of Nigerian Airforce Marshal, Cletus Udeagulu and his wife, he has been deprived of income and exposed to suffering, distress, pain psychological trauma and hardship as he cannot meet up with his responsibilities to his family or carter for himself.

“In view of the above, we have the instruction of our client to demand for the immediate release of his vehicle and the payment of the sum of N100 million as damages for the unlawful detention of his vehicle, the abuse of power and the professional misconduct of your officers within seven days of your receipt of this letter, failing which we have the firm instruction of our client to commence legal action against the Nigerian Air Force without further recourse to her.”
