The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has called on the newly inducted members to embrace continuous learning by fortifying themselves with the right skills through in-depth knowledge and the highest level of professionalism.

President and Chairman of the Council of the CITN, Samuel Agbeluyi, gave the charge at the institute’s 51st induction ceremony in Lagos.
He urged members to be up to date with happenings in the taxation landscape and help the government in the implementation of its policies.

While stating the council’s expectations, the CITN chief urged the inductees to project the institute positively through ethical conduct and by striving for excellence at all times in their services to employers, clients, and stakeholders.

According to him: “As you progress in your various fields, please do not fall into the trap of complacency. The institute expects you to hold in high esteem her core values which have been redefined as Service, Teamwork, Excellence and Professionalism (STEP).”

Noting that a lot of reforms have been happening in the tax and fiscal landscape in Nigeria since the inception of the current administration, Agbeluyi said taxation had taken centre stage in Nigeria, just as the institute has long anticipated and advised.

On the proposed Economic Stabilisation Bills, he said tax professionals needed to stay informed about the changes and understand their potential impact on the tax landscape.

He informed the audience that the institute has reviewed the bills and identified areas where specific provisions may benefit from further refinement to enhance tax administration and uphold the highest standards of professionalism within the tax system.

On concerns raised about certain areas in the bills by members, he said: “Rest assured, a committee of esteemed members from the institute has conducted a thorough analysis and has submitted recommendations for the council’s consideration. The CITN remains unwavering in its commitment to always provide technical support and advice to the government as we progress in these reforms.

“Even as we continue to provide our technical expertise in shaping government policies, I urge members to be up to date with happenings in the taxation landscape and help the government in the implementation of its well-crafted policies.”
