‘In My Time’ by Cyprain Ekwensi set for posthumous release

The late author Cyprain Ekwensi, MFR, is set to have his autobiography, ‘In My Time,’ published posthumously by Mazariyya Books Limited. This significant release will coincide with the return of his debut fiction work, ‘When Love Whispers,’ which has been out of print for decades.

In a collaborative effort, Mazariyya Books Limited of Abuja has finalised a publishing agreement with the Cyprian Ekwensi Foundation, led by its Chairman, Chiedu George Ekwensi. This partnership aims to reignite interest in Ekwensi’s literary legacy, providing a fresh opportunity for readers to engage with his memorable storytelling.

Scheduled for publication on or before February 2026, ‘In My Time’ offers a personal narrative reflecting the journey of one of Africa’s literary pioneers, Cyprian Ekwensi. His renowned works, such as “An African Night Entertainment” and “The Passport of Mallam Ilia,” laid foundational stones for modern Nigerian literature. Ekwensi, who transitioned from a career in pharmacy to writing, vividly captured the essence of northern Nigeria through rich imagery and metaphor.

He was posthumously honoured for his pioneering role in Young Adult Literature in 2024 by the TY BURATAI LITERARY INITIATIVE, established by General TY Buratai to promote Young Adult Literature. The award was facilitated by Dr Lizzy Iheanacho, the director of the Literary Initiative.

During the official signing ceremony at Mazariyya Books Limited in Garki, Abuja, Ahmed Maiwada, the chairman of Mazariyya Books and a prominent figure in publishing, emphasised the importance of this event in affirming the enduring relevance of Nigerian literature and its authors.

He committed to ensuring that these new releases are widely accessible while safeguarding against piracy. Additionally, he urged governmental support in addressing the high costs associated with publishing in Nigeria.

The son of the late author and CEO of the Cyprian Ekwensi Foundation, Chiedu Ekwensi, described “In My Time” as a compelling account of a young man’s educational journey and personal growth. He noted its significance in illustrating how character is formed and highlighted how Ekwensi’s earlier works, particularly “When Love Whispers,” continue to inspire generations.

At the event, prominent writer Chief Patrick Oguejiofor expressed his admiration for Cyprian Ekwensi, identifying him as his greatest literary influence. He shared how Ekwensi’s novels, from “An African Night’s Entertainment” to “The Rainmaker,” have profoundly shaped his writing journey, reinforcing the belief that while authors may pass on, their contributions to literature will forever resonate.
