Afrocritik broaden scope of work, appoints new managing editor

Afrocritik, a renowned platform for African entertainment, arts, culture, and lifestyle, has unveiled a series of transformative updates to its 2024 year-end coverage.

The platform made this known via a statement issued to newmen in Lagos State yesterday.

In the statement, they also announced the appointment of a new editor. It reads “In a strategic move to further bolster its storytelling capabilities, the platform has also appointed Emmanuel “Waziri” Okoro—a distinguished music and pop-culture journalist—as its new Managing Editor, underscoring its steadfast commitment to elevating authentic African narratives.

Afrocritik is significantly enhancing its annual music lists. The Top African Albums list has been expanded from 25 to 50 entries, while the Top African Songs list now boasts 100 entries, up from the previous 50.

This expansion is a clear reflection of Afrocritik’s dedication to celebrating the full spectrum of African musical talent. The platform’s revamped ranking criteria now emphasize key elements such as sonic brilliance, creativity, thematic depth, production quality, cultural relevance, and songwriting. This refined approach is designed to ensure that even independent artists—often operating with limited resources—receive the recognition they deserve alongside more established names.

In addition to these comprehensive music list enhancements, Afrocritik has introduced an exciting new feature: the Top 20 African Best Sports Personalities of 2024. This initiative is crafted to spotlight the impressive achievements of African athletes across various sports disciplines, celebrating their contributions and unifying the continent through their exceptional performances over the past year.

These sweeping updates are an integral part of Afrocritik’s comprehensive end-of-year coverage, capturing the milestones and cultural highlights of 2024. While the platform caters to a global audience, its core mission remains deeply rooted in promoting Africa’s rich creative legacy. By broadening its criteria and expanding its lists, Afrocritik not only reaffirms its role as a trusted digital hub for African stories but also positions itself as a key voice in the global conversation about arts, sports, and culture.

With these strategic changes, Afrocritik continues to push the boundaries of storytelling, inviting audiences around the world to experience the vibrant diversity and depth of Africa’s cultural and athletic achievements.

It will be recalled that in August, Evidence Egwuono Adjarho won the 2024 Afrocritik Prize for Criticism with Olúwatúnmiṣe Ọ̀tọ̀lórìn Akìgbógun coming as first runner up while Daniella Oluwatomisin Kolade was the second runner up.

Afrocritic was founded in 2021 by Samson Jikeme and Owanate Max-Harry.
