After his 2022 hit with Nigerian songbird Niniola dubbed, Disturb Phone, DJ 4rain crept up in the Afrobeats’ radar, as one of the most experimental sound shapers wherever African music is concerned, especially within the French community.
During his performance, yesterday, in the Cidade Velha fortress of Cabo Verde, 4Rain unleashed a feast of great music, combining the electronic and contemporary sounds of Africa. With his culture-facing performance, 4Rain crafted a performance that dwelled upon the city’s cultural and historical heritage.
4rain was incredibly brave and compassionate to bring light to this incredibly important location in European and African history, connected to the Transatlantic slave trade and the route to the Americas. Cidade Velha is an important place in the history of slavery, as millions of slaves were sold here. It was here that the destiny of each slave was determined, whether they would become Americans, Caribbeans, or inhabitants of Central or South America. Each of the black peoples of these countries had their fate linked to Cidade Velha. It is a testament to the power of this place that it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, and it should be remembered and celebrated for its historic significance.
