Sanusi receives reinstatement letter as Emir of Kano

It was a moment of jubilation on Friday in Kano as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially issued Muhammadu Sanusi II a letter of appointment at the Government House.

Amid a mammoth crowd of government functionaries, traditional and religious rulers, and well-wishers filling the symbolic African House to the brim, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was present.

Before reaffirming him as the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Governor Yusuf revealed that Sanusi would lead the Friday congregation prayers at the Government House and subsequently return to the palace, where he would henceforth resume traditional duties.

Yusuf explained that the return of Sanusi to his ancestral throne was deliberately intended to correct the actions of former Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who orchestrated the balkanization of the Kano emirate into five parts.

The Kano State House of Assembly yesterday passed a bill that repealed the Kano State Emirate Council 2019 law after its first reading. The 2024 repeal law abolished the entire five emirates and their first-class chiefs, with specific provisions that reversed all actions contained in the abolished law.

Expectedly, Governor Yusuf assented to the repeal of the emirate law 2024 and declared the return of Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.
