The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has said that quality service delivery is core to the achievement of its mandate of implementing the public enterprise reform programmes of the government.
The Director General of the Bureau, Mr. Ayodeji Gbeleyi, stated this at the BPE Servicom Day symposium in Abuja.
He said the title of the symposium, Impact of Attitudinal and Behavioural Ethics in the Workplace, effectively captures the new spirit in the bureau.
According to him, “In today’s dynamic business environment, attitudinal and behavioural ethics in the workplace play a pivotal role in shaping organisational culture, driving employee engagement, and fostering trust among stakeholders. These ethics help to create a positive and productive work environment.”
He said if the bureau was to achieve success in its various endeavours and contribute meaningfully to national growth and development, there is no better time to discuss a topic of this nature than now. “The impact of these ethics can be far-reaching, influencing employee behaviour, organisational culture and overall service excellence,” the BPE boss said.
He noted that the official theme for the 2024 SERVICOM Customer Service Week is “Above and Beyond,” adding that the theme highlights the importance of frontline service providers, emphasises team spirit within the workforce, and underscores its positive impact on the Bureau. “More importantly, it raises awareness of the value of excellent customer service in our operations,” he said.
“Therefore, if we are to meet and exceed expectations and fully align with Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, our achievements must indeed go ‘Above and Beyond the common level of service.’”
He said the Bureau is committed to delivering on its mandate, “and we pledge to uphold our core values (Integrity-Transparency, Professionalism, Accountability, Result-Orientation and Teamwork (I-PART)), which are aligned with the goals of SERVICOM,” he said.
In her goodwill message, the National Coordinator of Servicom, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli, said staff attitude plays a crucial role in shaping the workplace environment and overall organisational success.
She said a positive attitude among employees fosters collaboration, enhances communication, and promotes a culture of respect and support for staff and stakeholders. “When staff approach their roles with enthusiasm and a willingness to help, it not only boosts morale but also increases productivity and creativity,” she said. “However, a negative attitude can lead to conflict, decreased motivation, and lower performance levels.
“Organisations can cultivate a positive staff attitude through effective leadership, recognition of achievements, and opportunities for professional growth.”
The Servicom Coordinator said in highlighting the impact of attitudinal and behavioural ethics in the workplace, it should be noted that ethical behaviour shapes not only the reputation of an organisation but also its internal culture, employee morale, and overall effectiveness. “These play pivotal roles in influencing workplace dynamics and outcomes,” she said.
The guest speaker, Dr. Emeka Okengwu, noted in his presentation that attitude is a personal decision. He said that public service core values include accountability, impartiality, justice and fairness, avoiding doing harm and doing good.
He said that it is important to develop a value system that rewards efficiency without regard to the personality of the person.
