Cinematic horizons: Oginni Olalekan unveils the blueprint for Nollywood’s future

In a groundbreaking development for Nollywood, Funke Akindele’s cinematic masterpiece, ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ has achieved unprecedented success by becoming the highest-grossing film in the Nigerian box office for 2023. As the industry celebrates this milestone, it is an opportunity to delve into sustainable architecture and innovative cinema design, where Oginni Olalekan, a Nigerian architect, stands as a leading expert.

Oginni Olalekan is a notable figure in sustainable architecture. His experience encompasses international cinema projects, certifications from esteemed institutions, and recognition, including the Africa Business Concept Challenge in 2021, highlighting his commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainable design. Here, we discuss the reasons behind the remarkable success, challenges, realms, and future potential of Nigeria’s cinema and television sectors from the point of view of the globally recognized expert in this field, Oginni Olalekan.

OGINNI OLALEKAN: NOLLYWOOD’S ARCHITECTURAL LUMINARY
“Designing cinemas is more than just a profession for me; it’s a commitment to redefine spaces and create cultural hubs that resonate with our heritage,” remarks Oginni Olalekan, armed with degrees in architecture and an MBA from Lagos Business School.

Navigating the limitations posed by materials and foreign influences in existing cinemas, Olalekan’s mission is clear – to infuse innovation, sustainability, and Nigeria’s rich heritage. A Nigerian architect has achieved significant milestones in his career. With a distinguished record as the only chartered architect and Project Manager for the most completed cinemas in West Africa, he has overseen the design and completion of over 20 notable cinemas, including prestigious formats such as IMAX, MX4D, and Dbox.

While leading a commercial project, Oginni achieved a remarkable 15% reduction in project costs without compromising the integrity of the design.

Furthermore, the project obtained LEED certification, underscoring Olalekan’s commitment to environmentally conscious design practices. He remarks, “I am proud of the cooperative efforts that led to the successful completion of this work and look forward to applying the valuable insights from this experience to future ventures.”

One of the biggest challenges in cinema spaces now is related to the frequent changes in the function of spaces. “As they transition between different uses, adapting noise mitigation measures proves to be a dynamic and ongoing process, necessitating flexibility and innovation in design approaches,” Olalekan remarks. He reduces dependence on foreign expertise in design through innovative noise mitigation strategies. Oginni minimizes sound transmission by strategically positioning materials and employing innovative construction techniques, addressing complex urban noise challenges. “By integrating sustainable practices with local context considerations,” says Olalekan, “we can create environments that promote well-being and harmony.”

EMBRACING GLOBAL TRENDS
Nigeria is aligning itself with global trends in residential construction, which include adopting sustainable building practices, integrating intelligent technologies, and focusing on affordable housing solutions. “Discussing and promoting these trends within expert communities and professional associations worldwide is essential,” Oginni shares. He is an active member of prestigious organizations like ARCON (Architects Registration Council of Nigeria) and NIA (Nigerian Institute of Architects), which provide valuable insights and resources on sustainable building techniques, innovative housing designs, and community development initiatives. As a member of the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), Mr. Olalekan demonstrates his commitment to professional excellence. I gain access to cutting-edge industry knowledge and networking opportunities within the membership,” he adds.

THE SUCCESS BLEND: INNOVATION, TECHNOLOGY, AND BUSINESS
Reflecting on the growth of Nigerian cinemas, Olalekan notes the significant increase in screens and international recognition. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, he believes “the enduring appeal of Nollywood titles showcases the positive impact on the economy and cultural representation.”

Delving into the coexistence of cinemas and streaming services, Olalekan envisions a dynamic landscape where each complements the other.

“Cinemas offer a communal and immersive experience, while streaming services provide convenience and a personalized approach, contributing to the industry’s continued growth,” he predicts.

RESILIENCE AND TRANSFORMATION: NOLLYWOOD’S PATH FORWARD
Regarding the industry’s resilience after setbacks like the 2020 lockdowns, Olalekan emphasizes adaptation and innovation as critical factors. “Building resilience involves strategic planning, technological integration, and understanding evolving audience needs,” he advises, highlighting the importance of staying attuned to these factors.
As television evolves in the digital age, Olalekan predicts a transformation towards curated content, unique programming, and engaging viewer experiences. “Architects and visual artists can contribute by designing spaces that seamlessly blend traditional and modern elements,” he envisions.

With pay TV subscriptions projected to grow significantly, Olalekan foresees the need for flexible entertainment spaces that cater to diverse viewing experiences. “From acoustics to seating arrangements, every element should contribute to an immersive and enjoyable entertainment setting,” he suggests.

Looking ahead, Olalekan remains optimistic about the future of the Nigerian film and television industry. “Global collaborations, the rise of streaming platforms, and a growing appetite for diverse content present immense opportunities,” he notes. Challenges will arise, but with a forward-thinking approach and collaborative efforts, “the industry is poised to thrive and make a significant mark on the global stage,” concludes Oginni Olalekan.
