A couple living in Saint-Malo, France are awaiting a court verdict before going ahead to name their child “Hades”.
Hades is a name made popular by the Greek mythological deity of the underworld.
Kristina Desgres and Rodrigo Velasquez of Saint-Malo are the baby’s parent and they are yet to get court permission to name the baby “Hades”.
Oddity Central reports that Saint-Malo public prosecutor initially declined to grant the pair their “livret de Famille,” a required document obtained when a child is born or adopted by an individual or a couple.
The authorities assert, among other reasons, that the child may endure mocking in the future as he develops because the name “Hades” is thought to be identical with the god of the underworld, whose duty it is to keep the dead from leaving.
Kristina Desgres and Rodrigo Velasquez, who are willing to take their legal fight all the way to the top French courts, were not happy with the decision made by the authorities.
“None of the connections are made. Nobody on the maternity ward was surprised by it. Contrarily, people prefer it. Simply because we felt it was attractive, we chose this name. The baby’s mother, Kristina Desgres,” a prosecutor said.
The prosecutor explained that the father of the child recommended the name “Hades” and all the mother “wanted was a unique first name that sounds decent.”
The couple’s lawyer said the name “is not ludicrous, and we really don’t see why the Saint-Malo public prosecutor’s office decided to suit whereas the other public prosecutor’s offices in France had no objection to this first name.”
The court hearing on the matter is slated for Tuesday, April 4 and if the do not agree with it, they have rights to appeal the court ruling.
