Eko DisCo registers electricity company as Lagos subsidiary

Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EKEDC) has formally registered Excel Electricity Distribution Company Limited as a wholly owned subsidiary to oversee its electricity distribution operations within Lagos State.

The move, according to the company, aligns with the regulatory framework established by the Lagos State Government.

The restructuring follows the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023, which transferred regulatory authority for electricity markets from the federal to state level.

In compliance with this new law, the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) directed Eko DisCo — whose operations span both Lagos and Ogun States — to establish a separate corporate entity for its Lagos operations.

In response, the company registered Excel Electricity Distribution Limited to function under the joint regulatory supervision of LASERC and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

EKEDC emphasised that the development does not amount to a sale, takeover, or dissolution of the company. It remains a legally recognised entity under Nigerian law and continues to operate as an integral part of the nation’s electricity distribution network.

The ownership structure of Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc also remains unchanged. West Power and Gas Limited (WPG) retains a 60 per cent stake as the core investor, while the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) holds the remaining 40 per cent on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Under the new structure, Excel Electricity Distribution Limited — fully owned by EKEDC — will assume all operational responsibilities previously handled by Eko DisCo. The company assured customers that service delivery, billing systems, and points of contact will remain unchanged during the transition, though the rebranding from Eko DisCo to Excel DisCo will gradually take effect.

EKEDC also confirmed that it has now transmuted into a holding company, a transformation that will not affect service quality or operational continuity in Lagos.

It reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable and efficient electricity supply across its coverage areas, describing the development as a structural and regulatory adjustment, rather than a change in ownership.

The company said the clarification was necessary to ensure public understanding of the transition process and to dispel speculation about the nature of the changes within the organisation.
