Residents of Lagos and parts of Ogun State are expected to experience daily nine-hour electricity outages for 25 days, starting Monday, July 28, due to critical maintenance work by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) confirmed the development, stating that the disruption, which will last until August 21, stems from the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cable on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.
Speaking on a TVC programme on Monday, ANED’s Chief Executive Officer, Sunday Oduntan, said the outage would affect the entire Lagos State and areas of Ogun, including Abeokuta, Sagamu, and Ogijo. Power supply will be cut from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during the period.
Oduntan explained that the daily shutdown of the power system is necessary for safety while the upgrade is ongoing.
The TCN had earlier stated that it received approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigeria Independent System Operator to proceed with the upgrade, which it described as essential for enhancing grid reliability.
“Upon completion, the upgrade will enable full operationalisation of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, enhancing real-time monitoring and management of the power grid,” TCN said in a statement.
It added that while work is ongoing on the affected transmission line, other circuits will remain functional to ensure some level of power supply across the Lagos axis.
Confirming the planned outages, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) issued a notice to its customers stating: “Customers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding across our network due to the planned TCN outage. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause.”
Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) also announced that areas under its network will face disruptions during the period.
The power companies urged customers to bear with the inconvenience, while Oduntan assured that normal supply would resume after the upgrade is concluded.
