The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) has reported that over 80 transformers within its franchise areas were vandalised and looted during the recent power outage in northern Nigeria.
The power outage was caused by terrorists who destroyed transmission lines in Niger State.
This was disclosed by Hamisu Jigawa, the Distribution Company’s Chief Technical Officer in charge of operations, during a conversation with reporters at their Jos office.
Jigawa stated that large cables supplying power to some communities, valued at millions of naira, were also stolen during this period.
According to the official, the actions of the vandals have affected power supply to communities, adding that aluminium conductors feeding some areas were entirely vandalised as well.
He urged communities to be vigilant and to protect electrical assets, emphasising that vandalism would continue to leave people in darkness.
