Stakeholders in the sector have called for more concerted efforts to empower girls and women by providing them with the right resources and education to become leaders and changemakers in their communities.

They made the call at a ‘Girl Up’ event hosted by the school for students, educators and community leaders in commemoration of International Day of the girl-child.

At the event, stakeholders discussed the unique challenges girls face and explored ways of addressing them. The keynote speakers shared their personal journeys and insights on overcoming obstacles towards success, while emphasising the significance of education and self-belief as vital components in empowering young girls to become confident leaders in their communities.

One of the guest speakers, Mrs Olivia Adegoke, stressed the significance of community support in empowering women. “As a community, we must provide the right resources, tools, and education to empower girls and women.

Adegoke also harped on the need to inspire young girls to know that they can be whoever they want to be.
Head of Counseling, Greensprings, Mrs Chinelo Okoro, said every girl-child must actualise her potential to take on leadership roles, not only within the school, but in the society as well.

“They need to embrace their uniqueness and leadership potentials, which is why, as a school, we are proud to celebrate the International Day of the girl-child because we know that an empowered girl will lead to a better society,” Okoro stated.

The event featured students’ presentations and performances, where girls gave inspiration to the audience through poetry and music. The celebration ended with a collective pledge from attendees to support and uplift girls within different communities.
