The Anwar-ul-Islam Movement of Nigeria has placed a significant responsibility on its newly appointed National Chief Imam, Sheikh Muslihudeen Adebola Afisi to rectify the image of Islam through strict adherence to the Quran and Sunnah.
This directive was issued amidst concerns over the actions of some self-proclaimed imams that have brought disrepute to the faith.

During the 2025 Ramadan lecture and the official presentation of Sheikh Afisi, held at Anwar-ul-Islam Model College, Oniwaya, Agege, President of the Movement, Alhaji Mubashir Ojelade, emphasized the need for a return to the core principles of Islam. He congratulated the members on the “peaceful and rancour-free” selection of Sheikh Afisi, stressing that the new Imam was chosen without any presidential favoritism.

“The society is sick, and Islam needs to be purged of all kinds of bad habits,” Ojelade declared. “You are now in the fold of notable Imams, and we urge you to join others to restore the dignity and culture of Islam for Muslims in line with the Quran and Sunnah.”

In his inaugural lecture, titled “Sharia for Muslims in Southwestern Nigeria: Fundamentals, Misconceptions, and Benefits,” Sheikh Afisi addressed common misunderstandings surrounding Sharia law. He clarified its principles and highlighted its benefits as a guide for Muslim lives.

The Chairman of the event, Barr. Oyinlomo Danmole, lauded Sheikh Afisi’s scholarly approach and called for a more strategic pursuit of Sharia courts in the southwest. He suggested that instead of relying on traditional methods, Muslims should advocate for a public bill to establish Islamic private laws, including the recognition of Islamic marriages and inheritance adjudication, through legislative processes.

“A better approach would be the presentation of a public bill where issues of Islamic private laws, such as Islamic marriage recognition and inheritance adjudication, can be processed through the act of parliament,” Danmole stated. “That way, we will achieve our cause without much ado.”

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, also praised Sheikh Afisi’s presentation, acknowledging its value in compiling reports and opinions on the complex issue of Sharia law in the region. He indicated that the lecture would be a valuable resource in understanding the perspectives of Islamic leaders.
