On Sheikh Muyideen Ajani Bello’s enduring legacy
“—Though they were not commanded but to worship One God — making the practice of their religion pure and sincere to Him alone, being ever upright of heart— and to duly establish the prayer, and to give the Zakat, Charity. For that, indeed, is the upright religion.” Qur’an 98:5
Until he transited last Friday (December 6, 2024) at the ripe age of 84, Sheikh Muhydeen Ajani Bello had distinguished himself as a restless preacher of global repute. As a revered Islamic preacher known for his fearless stance on social issues and unwavering commitment to community welfare, his entire life was dedicated to preaching 24/7.
Nothing illustrates this virtue of his than the public notice that on December 7, 2024 (day after his passing), he had been billed to speak at the grand finale and second Waleematul Quran graduation of the Muslim Association of Virtually Impaired of Nigeria (MAVIN) in Lagos.
Also in the public domain was his invitation also as the guest speaker at the commissioning, today (December 13,2024), of the Remodeled Ifetedo Central Mosque in Ife South Local Council of Osun State.
Born in1940 into the family of Alhaji Bello Ajani and Alhaja Ubaidat Bello of Arolu Compound, Ita Olukoyi, Ibadan, Sheikh Bello was more than a religious leader; he was a galvanizing force for many, advocating for justice, compassion, and unity within a diversely religious society. Certainly, his death has left a palpable void among his followers and the entire Muslim community in Nigeria.
Sheikh Bello was renowned not only for his scholarly contributions but also for his fearless approach to confronting societal issues.
He was unafraid to speak out against injustices ranging from corruption to inequality, using his platform to shed light on pressing issues that often went unaddressed.
His speeches were characterized by a blend of theological insight and a firm critique of social vices, demonstrating how Islamic teachings could actively influence contemporary governance and societal values.
In a country grappling with religious polarization, Sheikh Bello’s emphasis on coexistence and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups served as a constructive counter-narrative to division. His ability to engage audiences of varying backgrounds garnered him respect beyond his immediate followers. He promoted a message of unity, urging Nigerians to embrace their differences while fostering communal harmony.
Throughout his life, Sheikh Bello was known for his hands-on approach to community issues. He led numerous initiatives aimed at uplifting the marginalized, including educational programmes, health services, and interfaith dialogues. His efforts to address youth unemployment and empower women reinforced his belief in building a society rooted in compassion and teamwork.
Many Nigerians will remember Sheikh Bello for his role in mediating conflicts and dispelling tensions within communities. His interventions often mitigated potential clashes, fostering peace in times of unrest. As the crisis of trust in governance persists in Nigeria, the void left by his passage will be hard to fill.
All these humanitarian services sparked outpouring of grief among his followers and the Nigerian public upon the news break of his death. Social media platforms and streets alike became venues for tributes and reflections on his life and legacy. For many, he was not just a preacher; he was a mentor, a source of inspiration, and a guiding light in times of darkness.
National President, Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Alhaji AbdulRafiu Ademola Sanni, said as a Missioner of the Northern State Council of the society, Sheikh Bello played an instrumental role in promoting unity, faith, and moral values across diverse communities.
“His exemplary leadership, profound knowledge, and unwavering commitment to the cause of Allah have left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals.
“As we bid farewell to our beloved Sheikh Muyideen Ajani Bello, let us honor his legacy by emulating his dedication to faith, service, and humanity,” he stated.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, described the death as “shocking and devastating”.
The former Osun State Governor also commiserated with the people of Ibadan, where Bello hails from, the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, the immediate family, friends of the deceased and the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN).
Describing late Bello as someone who lived a pious and exemplary life that was devoted to the service of Allah and humanity, his preaching contributed in no small measure to the spread and understanding of contentious issues as they relate to true and unambiguous teachings of Islam.
Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said: “The late Sheikh Alhaji Muyideen Ajani Bello would be remembered for his great sacrifice and commitment to the propagation of Islam, honesty, dignity, harmony and moral development of our people.
“I pray that Allah grants the repose of his soul and grants his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he stated.
President, Papa-Ajao Muslim Assembly (PAMAS) and Chief Imam Al-Ameen Central Mosque, Alhaji Jamiu Salisu Olonade said: “Sheikh Bello was not only a scholar in Islamic jurisprudence; he was a community leader, a mentor, and a father figure to many. His compassion extended beyond the walls of the mosque; he was always there for those in need, offering guidance, support, and solace during times of hardship. His unwavering commitment to social justice and community service left an indelible mark on the lives of many.”
Certainly, Nigerians will continue to mourn the loss of a leader whose impact transcended religious affiliations, as he advocated for societal change applicable to all citizens. The fearlessness with which he championed justice set a precedent for future leaders, challenging them to prioritize the needs of the communities they serve.
In an era rife with division, his unwavering commitment to dialogue and unity should inspire both individuals and organizations to continue his work. Communities must come together to promote the values of empathy, justice, and resilience that he embodied.
