Varsity urges medical doctors to pioneer innovation

The Vice-Chancellor, Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), Prof. Ndukwe Okeude, has urged the medical doctors trained by the school to pioneer medical innovation, advocate for health equity, and act as agents of positive change.

Speaking at the induction ceremony for 140 medical doctors, the vice-chancellor, who was represented by his Deputy (Administration), Prof. Joshua Ogbonna, pledged to sustain the training of quality medical doctors to brighten the future of healthcare in the country.

The Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Fatima Kyari, who was represented by Dr Tijani Mandaka, threatened to withdraw the practising license of any doctor who contravenes the medical doctors’ practice oath, and urged them to abide by the ethics of the medical profession.

The Provost of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof. Chuks Kamanu, said the inducted medical doctors were appropriately trained and equipped with practical experience, values and principles that will enable them to practice.

Also speaking, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) Aba, Prof. Ijeoma Nduka, lauded Alex Otti-led administration for supporting the accreditation of post-graduate training in the teaching hospital; upgrading housemanship training, renovation of house officers’ quarters, and pledging to build an auditorium to accommodate the growing students’ population.

According to him, the governor is creating an enabling environment for healthcare delivery in the teaching hospital, and planning to build a simulation laboratory for ease of learning, in tandem with global standards for medical education; restored steady power supply; and employed medical personnel to boost services in the hospital.

Nduka advised the inductees to join the hospital for their mandatory housemanship training, assuring them of the necessary help and assistance.
