President, Child Safety Education and Protection Initiative (CSEPI), Richard Amuwa

The campaign tagged #FATHERSSAYNOTORAPE will take off from Ikeja Local Council to Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa by 10:00am on June 5.

According to the President of Child Safety Education and Protection Initiative (CSEPI), Mr. Richard Amuwa, due to the increase in the rate of child sexual abuse in the country, it has become imperative to lend their voices by saying no to rape, as it has become a menace to the society.

He said: “Men and fathers will actively participate in this campaign to show our displeasure against any form of sexual abuse against children, because the incessant rape of children in our society is on the increase, thereby having adverse effect on the mental and psychological health of affected children.”

Amuwa stated that the 2014 National Survey on Violence Against Children reveals that six out of every ten children in Nigeria have suffered one or more forms of physical, sexual or emotional violence before they reach 18, and that one in four girls and one in ten boys have experienced sexual violence.

According to him, this violence often occurs in a place the child considered safe, such as homes and schools, and fewer than five per cent of children who are victims of violence ever get the help they needed to recover.

He said: “Also, fathers have to lend their voices to this campaign against child rape in order to ensure that abusing children in any form in our society is drastically reduced as children look up to their fathers as role models and protectors.

“We are partnering with Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development and other security agencies in the state to achieve a successful campaign.”
