Hollywood, in the past decades, has seen some of the greatest movies in the world, but only a few percentages of those movies were directed by a woman. In the TV series Feud, a woman was deprived of the opportunity of directing a movie because in their opinions, a woman cannot handle the burden of a film and a female-directed movie does not do well in the Box Office.

Greta Gerwig was nominated for the 2018 Oscar Award for the movie, Lady Bird, which follows the complicated relationship between a mother and a daughter. She became the fifth woman to be nominated in the 90-year history of the show, and the first woman in the last eight years.

In this spirit, here are three female-directed films you should plan on seeing this year.

Wrinkle In Time

Ava DuVernay is best known for her searing films Selma and 13th. A Wrinkle in Time is based on Madeleine L’Engle’s classic American novel which follows 13-year-old Meg Murry in her journey across the universe to search for her astrophysicist father – who is being held captive by an amorphous dark presence. Starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Storm Reid. It is already one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

Mary Queen Of Scots
The artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse, Josie Rourke, turns her hand to film for Mary Queen of Scots – a dramatic retelling of Elizabeth I’s power struggle with her Scottish cousin. Margot Robbie will star as the Virgin Queen, with Saoirse Ronan in the titular role. Also, Joe Alwyn will play Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and rumoured lover of Elizabeth I.

The Darkest Minds

Jennifer Yuh Nelson directs the film adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s hit sci-fi thriller, boasting a stellar line-up that includes Amandla Stenberg, Mandy Moore and Gwendoline Christie. After a disease kills 98 percent of America’s children, the survivors develop superpowers and are placed in internment camps. 16-year-old Ruby, played by Amandla Stenberg, escapes and joins a group on the run from the government.
