Nigerian filmmaker and director, Adeoluwa Owu, popularly known as Captain Degzy, is continuing a year of significant professional milestones, following multiple festival wins for his latest feature, ÌWÉÀLÁ: An Ojúde Oba Story, produced by ComeOnNaija, and his role as Show Caller for the Black Market premiere experience, the large-scale movie event held at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.

Owu recently travelled to Toronto for the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF), where ÌWÉ ÀLÁ won Best Production Design and Best Original Music. The film had previously won Best Film at BINFF, bringing its festival recognition to three awards across the two festivals.
The recognition adds to a growing body of work for Owu, whose career spans directing, film and television production, cinematography, branded content and large-scale creative productions.
A trained and certified filmmaker, Owu has built an extensive body of work across the Nigerian film industry. His directing and cinematography credits include The Griot, The Tribe Called Judah, This Lady Called Life, Introducing the Kujus, Kambili, My Village People, Far From Home, Battle on Buka Street, Adire, Jagun Jagun, What No One Knows and ÌWÉÀLÁ, among others.

His international production experience also includes work with CNN’s Paths Unknown featuring Anthony Bourdain, Beyoncé’s Black Is King and the BBC, alongside collaborations with leading production houses, producers, agencies and brands.

His 2021 feature The Griot won the Oronto Douglas Award for Best Nigerian Film at AFRIFF, while his other works have received recognition at film festivals across Africa and internationally.
FROM THE SCREEN TO THE LIVE EXPERIENCE

Following the recognition for ÌWÉÀLÁ, Owu took on a different production challenge with the Black Market premiere experience.
On 26 September 2026, he served as Show Caller for the Black Market premiere experience at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, where more than 51,000 attendees gathered for the one-night movie event.

The event successfully broke the Guinness World Record for the largest audience at a film screening, creating a landmark moment for the Nigerian entertainment industry.
As Show Caller, Owu was responsible for coordinating the live flow of the premiere experience, working across cues, transitions and timing to ensure that the programme moved seamlessly from one moment to the next.

The experience builds on Owu’s previous involvement in large-scale live productions, including Global Citizen Live in Lagos, while adding another dimension to his work across film and entertainment.

With major collaborations and projects in development for 2027, Owu is continuing to expand his work as a director while taking on increasingly ambitious film, television and large-scale creative productions.
