5 Ways You Can Maintain Good Hygiene During Your Menstrual Period
Keeping good hygiene during your menstrual period is very important so much so that May 28 of every year has been set aside to celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day. Menstrual Hygiene Day is aimed at raising the awareness and importance of good menstrual hygiene management.
Initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2014, it aims to benefit women and girls worldwide. The 28th was selected to acknowledge that 28 days is the average length of the menstrual cycle.
Here are some tips to help maintain good hygiene during your periods.
Although some people do whether they are on their period or not but is advised that you take your bath at least twice a day when you are on your period. Having regular baths during your periods will help clean your private parts as well as relieve your mood.
Change your pads and tampons regularly
The first rule to maintaining good menstrual hygiene is to ensure that you change your pads and tampons on the regular. If you are using a pad, it is advisable to change it every six hours while if you are using a tampon, every two hours is recommended. The reason for this is that when menstrual blood is released from the body, various organisms are
attracted to the body which multiplies in the warmth of the blood and causes irritation, rashes or urinary tract infections
Use good sanitary products
Find a good sanitary brand that works for you and stick to it. Women with sensitive skin may avoid sanitary pads with plastic lining, as they can cause rashes, itchiness, and boils when rubbing against the skin.
Avoid soaps or vaginal hygiene products
The vagina has its own cleaning mechanism that works in a very fine balance of good and bad bacteria. Washing it with soap can kill the good bacteria making way for infections. So, while it is important to wash regularly during this time, all you need to use is some warm water. You can use soap on the external parts but do not use it inside your vagina or vulva.
Avoid tight-fitting clothing
During your period, opt for comfortable and loose clothing, rather than jeans or tight-fitting. This will ensure airflow around the sensitive areas as well as prevent sweating to a large extent.
