Gifts: The Nigerian Problem with Wedding Registry
Over the years, Nigerian weddings have become more lavish and glamorous. We see asoebis, colours and most important of all, gift wraps and presentation. The problem with gifts, however, is getting the right gift that appeals to the couple’s wish list which, in turn, is uploaded online or in a registry store.
Although unpopular, wedding registries ease this stress.
Imagine having a wishlist of your wedding presents and having your guests get them. But here is the catch with this system in Nigeria:
Greed: Wishlists in Nigeria is an opportunity to ask for high-ending items. There are people who abuse the intent of wedding registries and fill their list with high-ending gifts with options of cash.
People may not actually find it funny: Our parents, friends and a lot of people would probably roll their eyes and call you ungrateful or wonder why you can’t be satisfied with what you will be provided with on that day.
Despite the daunting risks, wedding registries actually have their benefits:
They reduce stress: As a guest, the thought of carrying a big package while battling with your flowing agbada or double decked gele is reduced.
With a wedding registry, guests can have a guided focus and get the couples what they need and would appreciate the most.
Also, the newlyweds are saved from the stress of moving their gifts from place to place, all thanks to the registry store.
Having a wedding registry increases your chances of having valuable gifts.
