Award-winning Nigerian gospel singer and worship leader, Mercy Chinwo, has continued to expand her international reach after taking her gospel ministry to South America, where she drew thousands of worshippers to a live concert in Suriname.
The concert was marked by energetic music, worship and powerful moments of spiritual reflection, with a large number of young people in attendance. Beyond the musical performances, the event also provided an opportunity for attendees to respond to the Christian message, with several people reportedly giving their lives to Christ.
For Chinwo, the Suriname outing represents another significant step in her growing international ministry, as her music continues to connect audiences across geographical, cultural and linguistic boundaries.
The visit also featured a special reception for the gospel star and her husband, Pastor Blessed Uzochikwa, by the President of Suriname, Her Excellency Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, further highlighting the growing international profile of the Nigerian gospel artiste.
Chinwo’s journey to international prominence has been marked by a series of notable achievements. She first gained national recognition after winning the second season of Nigerian Idol in 2012, before dedicating her career to gospel music.
Her breakthrough gospel hit, “Excess Love,” established her as one of Nigeria’s leading contemporary gospel voices and earned her multiple honours. At the 2019 Africa Gospel Awards Festival, she won Africa Gospel New Artiste of the Year, Africa Gospel Female Artiste of the Year and Africa Gospel Song of the Year for “Excess Love.”
She has also won Gospel Artiste of the Year at the AFRIMMA Awards, Africa Gospel Music of the Year at the CLIMA Africa Awards and other recognitions for her contributions to gospel music. In 2025, she received the Headies Award for Best Inspirational Single for “You Do This One” and was also recognised at the Trace Awards.
Her musical catalogue includes projects such as The Cross: My Gaze, Satisfied, Elevated and Overwhelming Victory, with songs including “Excess Love,” “Obinasom,” “Na You Dey Reign,” “Wonder” and “You Do This One” helping to establish her distinctive sound and ministry.
Beyond awards and chart success, Chinwo’s growing influence has been defined by her emphasis on using music as a vehicle for worship and evangelism.
From Africa to South America, her message remains consistent: using her voice and music to communicate the love, hope and message of Jesus Christ.
