Maintaining radiantly clear skin is a full-time commitment to a lifestyle that isn’t always cost friendly. As such, being able to alternate between professional services and a little DIY skin care can come in handy. Also, the rise of safer alternative ways of taking care of our skin using natural beauty practices means that store-bought products can be recreated with more skin friendly and organic ingredients.

Fortunately, kitchen ingredients can double as food for your stomach and skin. Here are a few simple beauty recipes you can make at home from your basic kitchen ingredients;

Rice Water Facial Toner

This ancient Japanese beauty secret has been used for centuries as a sunburn remedy, for soothing itchy and dry skin. It also helps to reduce large pores and helps keep your skin shiny and bright.

Ingredient

• ½ cup of rice
• 1 ½ cup of distilled water
• A medium-sized bowl and mason jar

Method

Place your rice in a bowl and rinse your rice to get rid of any dirt. Pour in the distilled water until it has covered the rice and let it sit for an hour till the water turns cloudy. Drain and pour into the mason jar and refrigerate. Using a cotton wool pad, apply all over your face at night and leave to dry. Use within three to four days.

Ground Coffee And Sugar Scrub

Exfoliation is a very essential part of your beauty routine because dull skin prevents the skin from glowing. Ground coffee and sugar are great exfoliating agents because they contain caffeine; which firms and wakes up your skin cells and glycerine; which is a skin softener.

Ingredient

• 1 cup ground coffee
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 ½ cup olive oil

Method

Mix the dry ingredients and the olive oil thoroughly to create a thick paste. Scrub your face and body gently in a circular motion. Rinse and pat dry with a clean towel.

Tumeric + Honey Face Mask

Turmeric is the go-to kitchen ingredient for brightening and clearing skin discolourations while honey moisturises and helps fight acne. The two create an effective face mask that is quick and easy to make.

Ingredient

• 1 tsp turmeric powder
• 2 tsp natural pure honey

Method

Mix the turmeric powder and honey in a bowl until it forms a smooth paste, apply all over your face down to your neck and leave to dry. Rinse off thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel.

Cooling Cucumber Slices

This recipe is the easiest to get through and it is for relaxing days. Cucumber is rich in ascorbic acid which helps with water retention. To help reduce puffiness and redness around your eyes, refrigerate and then cut slices of cucumber and place on your eyes for 15 minutes.
