Nigerian comedian and actor Okey Bakassi has dismissed reports claiming that his marriage has collapsed, describing the allegations as false and disrespectful to his family.
The actor reacted after a misleading social media post alleging that his wife had requested a divorce went viral on Monday, October 12. The post claimed that Bakassi had spent 15 years working in Nigeria and sending money to support his wife and children in the United States before his wife allegedly asked to end their marriage.
However, Bakassi, in a video shared on social media, explained that the claims were fabricated and stemmed from a video he had made about Nigerian politics that was taken out of context and presented with a misleading narrative.According to him, the publication had caused concern among friends, relatives and fans, many of whom contacted him and his wife to establish whether the allegations were true.
“While I was on set today filming a new movie with my colleagues, someone was busy on social media trying to disrespect me and my family,” he said.He added that the publication used his name and pictures of him and his wife to suggest that they had gone their separate ways.“Please, let me say to our friends, family and fans, my wife and I are still together. God forbid anything will ever happen to us,” he said.
Bakassi also rejected claims that his wife had relocated to the United States to study nursing, clarifying that she lives in Canada and is not a nurse, contrary to the viral report. The comedian described his wife and children as the most important people in his life and urged members of the public to disregard the claims.
He also criticised those who circulated the report without verifying its authenticity, asking his followers to report the account responsible for spreading the allegations on X.
The controversy comes weeks after Bakassi and his wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The comedian marked the milestone on September 1, reflecting on their relationship, which began in 1988, and thanking his wife for her love, sacrifices and support throughout their marriage.
The couple exchanged marital vows in Port Harcourt in 2001 and have three children. Bakassi’s response has drawn attention to the spread of unverified celebrity stories on social media, particularly posts that use personal details and images to attract engagement.
He maintained that his family remained intact and urged friends, relatives and fans not to believe the claims circulating online.
