Nollywood actor and filmmaker Daniel Etim-Effiong has stirred debate over marriage and infidelity after suggesting that spouses should respond to cheating with empathy and support rather than retaliation.

Speaking on a podcast hosted by Ifedayo Agoro, Etim-Effiong argued that infidelity should first be treated as a personal problem requiring understanding and collective healing within a relationship.

According to him, when a partner cheats, the initial response should be focused on helping the person confront and overcome the issue before addressing the broader impact on the marriage.

“So I think your approach first should just be like if someone messes up in a marriage, you should first come from a place of ‘how can I help you?’ That should be the approach. How can I help you out of this problem?” he said.

The actor, known for roles in The Men’s Club and Castle & Castle, maintained that compassionate responses to betrayal reflect selfless love and emotional maturity.

“Yes. If you cheat on me, you’re in a problem. How can you come out of this problem? How can I help you get out of this thing you’re in and then come so that we can talk about us and we can start healing,” he added.

Etim-Effiong further argued that couples should confront such challenges together rather than focusing solely on personal hurt.

“Love is not self-seeking. I know it’s a hard thing to think about, but think about it that way,” he said.

The comments have generated widespread reactions online, particularly because the actor’s marriage to Toyosi Etim-Effiong has often attracted public scrutiny on social media.

The couple, who have been married for over six years and share three children, have consistently maintained a united front despite criticism and public commentary surrounding their relationship and careers.

Etim-Effiong remains one of Nollywood’s prominent leading actors, with a career spanning acting, directing and writing, while his latest remarks continue to fuel conversations about love, forgiveness and boundaries in modern relationships.
