Heart disease

Cardiologist and Health Coach, Dr Monisola Adaniji, has advised youths to reduce the intake of alcohol and energy drinks because they affect the heart and raise blood pressure.

According to the cardiologist, certain lifestyle in youths predisposes them to hypertension. “These days, you don’t need to move to get anything done. Everything can be ordered online and delivered. Even work is from home. We are not moving and it has made us live a sedentary lifestyle, a life that lacks exercise.”

Adanijo also warned against excessive eating of junk food as it is full of bad fat, sugar and salt, adding that such food could cause obesity. She revealed that they also raise the blood pressure.

The Cardiologist at Naveen Healthcare Limited, reiterated that cigarettes, shisha and marijuana affect the lungs and causes chronic inflammation, which also predisposes to chronic illnesses and hypertension.

“Youths should avoid smoking anything and everything. These young ones should reduce the intake of alcohol, and energy drinks which affects the heart and raises blood pressure.”
She advised that, at least 30 minutes of any exercise, would help to reduce blood pressure and improve the general health and well being.

“Youths should eat less salt, sugar, and oil. This can be done by reducing the amount of processed food. Food should consist of plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole foods prepared from natural ingredients. Also, getting at least 6 hours of sleep every night is important for sleep reduction.  While we can’t eliminate stress, we can find ways to reduce it as much as possible.”

The theme for this World’s Hypertension Day which was recently held is, “Measure your blood accurately, Control it, Live Longer.” and with a significant rise in hypertension among youths, experts and stakeholders have resorted to creating awareness and providing healthy tips for heart management.
