No fewer than 23 persons were killed, and 48 others sustained various degrees of injuries in a ghastly road crash on the Muhammadu Buhari Interchange Flyover, Hotoro, Kano.

Eyewitnesses told The Guardian that the accident, which involved a heavy truck with an unknown registration number conveying goods and passengers, occurred Thursday night.

It was gathered that the heavily loaded trailer was heading towards Maiduguri Road before it suddenly rammed into part of the bridge.

Confirming the development, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State, Umar Matazu, said the unfortunate accident occurred at about 9:50 p.m. on Thursday.

“We received a call at about 09:50 p.m. on February 13, 2025. Upon receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the incident to rescue the victims at 10:00 p.m.,” he said.

The sector commander further explained that the accident occurred due to dangerous driving resulting from overspeeding, which led to a loss of control under the bridge.

“The passengers involved were 67 adults and four children, out of 71 passengers. Twenty-three lost their lives, while 48 others sustained serious injuries. The injured were taken to Murtala Mohammed General Hospital for urgent medical treatment,” Abdullahi said.

The sector commander extended deep condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured victims.

He warned drivers and the general public against overloading trailers with goods, animals, and passengers, stressing that such dangerous practices significantly increase the risk of fatal crashes.

The FRSC remains committed to ensuring safety on our roads and urges all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives.
