Govt, ECOWAS, Red Cross empower flood victims
The Adamawa State government has denied receiving 20 trucks of grains from the Federal Government. The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, James Iliya, at a press conference in Yola, clarified that the state was yet to receive the consignment.
Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, had at a briefing in Abuja, disclosed that the President Bola Tinubu administration had distributed 20 trucks consisting of about 1, 200 bags of 50kg rice to each state of the federation as palliatives to cushion effects of the current food crisis in the country.
But the commissioner insisted that they have not received the grains, adding that the Governor Ahmadu Fintiri-led government has been distributing relief materials to citizens from its resources.
“The Adamawa State government is yet to receive the purported 20 trucks of food items allocated by the Federal Government to the state. The government acknowledges the receipt in part of fertiliser allocated to Adamawa State and distribution of the same is ongoing as they keep arriving together with the ones procured by the state government,” Iliya stated.
This comes as the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Red Cross Society of Nigeria on Tuesday distributed N91,500 in cash each to 3,500 households, who are victims of flood in six states across the federation.
The distribution began with an immediate delivery of N30, 000 to each of the beneficiaries, with the balance to be offset in two instalments. Additionally, the government provided cooking oil, grains and beans to the designated vulnerable households. The actions were described as a government’s response to lessen challenges of food shortage experienced by the flood victims.
The grand finale, which held in the remote village of Mayo-Ine of Fufore Local Council of the state, was funded by ECOWAS and implemented by NRCS. Over 1,000 households from Fufore and Hong council areas reportedly benefitted from the gesture. Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abel Initian, commended the Tinubu-ed ECOWAS Commission for the intervention.
