Coalition accuses ruling party of blaming Buhari for Nigeria’s woes, but now praising him
African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a three-day suspension of all political activities to mourn the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
The party declared a national mourning period in honour of Buhari’s life and legacy, highlighting his contributions to national unity, democratic governance, and national development.
In a statement signed by the Media Adviser and Chief Press Secretary to the ADC interim national chairman, Paul Mumeh, the party’s leader, Senator David Mark, described Buhari as a statesman of exceptional character.
Mark commended Buhari’s roles as a military leader and a democratically elected President, praising his discipline, dedication, and patriotism.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman of exceptional character. As a soldier, he fought bravely to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of our nation.
“As a democratically elected President, he contributed significantly to the growth and consolidation of democratic governance in Nigeria. His leadership reflected discipline, commitment, and a deep sense of patriotism,” Mark stated.
The party also called on the Federal Government to immortalise the former President through national monuments, institutions, or initiatives that reflect the values he upheld.
MEANWHILE, the ADC has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of praising former President Muhammadu Buhari after blaming him for the nation’s calamities.
A statement, yesterday, by the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, noted that the ruling party and the Federal Government had spent the last two years discrediting Buhari’s record and achievements.
“ADC notes with regret that his own political party and the government that had done everything in the last two years to tarnish his records, dismantle his legacies, and blame him for every one of their failings are now posturing as the chief mourners at his burial.”
“This is sheer hypocrisy and a brazen move to harvest political gains from a national tragedy,” the statement reads.
MEANWHILE, the APC in its reaction to the death, expressed shock and deep sadness over the passing of Buhari at 82.
APC, in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Mr Felix Morka, noted that Nigeria had lost an enigmatic leader, iconic elder statesman, and exemplary patriot, whose life of devoted resolve, resilience, discipline and integrity would remain evergreen in the hearts and minds of the present and future generations of Nigerians.
The statement read: “On behalf of the Acting National Chairman, Bukar Dalori, the National Working Committee (NWC), members and all stakeholders of our great Party, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the former President’s immediate family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the entire Federal Government of Nigeria, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians over this massive and irreparable loss.”
