Africa’s Spiro gets global climate backing, targets $200m revenue boost

Spiro, a leading Pan-African electric mobility firm, has been selected for the prestigious 2025 Regional Platforms for Climate Projects (RPCP) Pipeline, a major endorsement of its climate leadership and innovation in Africa’s transport sector.

The RPCP, an initiative spearheaded by the UN High-Level Climate Champions, aims to unlock capital for transformative climate ventures in emerging markets and developing economies. Spiro’s inclusion not only underscores its role in reshaping urban mobility across the continent but also marks a significant step in Africa’s low-carbon development agenda.

Established in 2022, Spiro operates a vertically integrated electric two-wheel mobility platform and has rapidly expanded its footprint to eight African countries: Benin, Togo, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Cameroon, and Tanzania. Its model combines electric motorbike sales, battery-as-a-service subscriptions, after-sales servicing, and data monetisation through analytics and licensing.

So far, Spiro has deployed over 35,000 electric motorbikes and facilitated more than 20 million battery swaps, enabling over 500 million kilometres of carbon-free travel. The company estimates that its operations have helped to avert at least 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Beyond environmental gains, Spiro’s impact spans job creation and local capacity development. With manufacturing hubs in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Nigeria, the firm has generated over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, over 40 per cent of them filled by women. Through its Spiro Academy, the company is equipping local talent with medium- to high-level technical skills to drive industrial growth in the sector.

Financially, Spiro is on a fast-rising trajectory. After generating $23 million in revenue in 2024, the company is projecting a leap to $200 million in 2025. To fuel this momentum, it is currently raising $50 million in Series A funding, complementing $120 million in equity and $23 million in debt already secured.

The company’s admission into the RPCP Pipeline is expected to boost visibility among global investors and policy actors. As part of the initiative, Spiro will be showcased at international climate events, featured in publications by the Climate Champions Team, and connected with strategic partners across the climate finance ecosystem.

With Africa’s transport emissions on the rise and fossil fuel dependency threatening both energy security and household incomes, Spiro’s locally-manufactured, electric alternatives are offering a timely solution.

“We are building mobility for Africa, by Africans, and for the world,” the company noted, emphasising its commitment to affordable, accessible, and sustainable transport systems.

Currently operating the largest battery-swapping infrastructure on the continent, with over 600 swap stations, Spiro sees itself as not just a business, but a movement helping African economies pivot away from costly, polluting fuel imports toward indigenous, clean-tech solutions.
