Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has announced the naming of a new high court complex after his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu, as a tribute to the late leader’s vision for justice reform.

The complex would be called the Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu Judiciary Complex, located in Akure, the state capital.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the Judiciary Village on Friday, Aiyedatiwa described the project as a long-overdue milestone for Ondo State.

“Since the creation of Ondo State in 1976, no effort has been made to provide a modern facility for the administration of justice. Today, we are not just making history; we are fulfilling the dream of our late leader, Akeredolu,” he said.

The late governor, who passed away on 27 December 2023, had initiated the plans for the Judiciary Village during his administration.

Aiyedatiwa emphasised that the project aligns with his administration’s commitment to justice and the welfare of judicial officers.
“This project is not happening because the state is financially buoyant but because we are prioritising the needs of our judiciary to speed up the dispensation of justice,” he added.

The complex will include modern facilities such as a ceremonial court, modular courtrooms, a registry, a library, and exhibition halls.
Aiyedatiwa noted that these additions aim to create a conducive environment for legal proceedings.

The state’s Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, praised the initiative as a landmark achievement, lauding the governor for prioritising the judiciary.

“This project will redefine how justice is delivered in Ondo State,” Odusola said.

The flag-off comes as part of the state’s commemoration of the first anniversary of Akeredolu’s death.

While some stakeholders have welcomed the move as a fitting tribute, critics, including Akeredolu’s widow, have raised concerns about the sincerity of the government’s intentions in honouring her late husband.

In one of her recent posts, she said the government is doing all it can to dent the reputation of her late husband and that no family member was carried along in what the government is doing.
