Africa Missions Global (AMG) and the British Council have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen teacher training initiatives in Nigeria and other African countries in order to boost the standards of education on the continent.
The agreement will enable AMG to use the British Council’s free online training resources in support of its teacher development programmes, as well as to provide additional offline training support tailored to AMG’s needs.
With the MOU signed by Pastor Brown Oyitso, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Africa Missions Global, and Donna McGowan, Country Director of the British Council in Nigeria, the collaboration will also improve teacher skills and capacity, as well as enhance classroom quality and student outcomes in participating communities.
According to Oyitso, who emphasised the transformative potential of the partnership, “This partnership with the British Council represents a major step in our commitment to improving education outcomes in Africa. By combining AMG’s community reach with the British Council’s expertise in education, we are better positioned to support teachers and strengthen classroom learning.
“Africa Missions Global is a not-for-profit organisation with over 28 years of experience delivering impactful education and skills development programmes in more than 20 African countries.
“Its projects focus on teacher development, youth training, and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on quality education and SDG 17 on partnerships.”
On her part, the Country Director of the British Council stressed that, “At the British Council, we are committed to supporting teachers with the skills and resources they need to deliver high-quality learning outcomes for young people.
“Our collaboration with Africa Missions Global is centred on sharing open-access training resources and expertise that can strengthen teacher capacity. We work with a wide range of partners globally, and our goal remains the same: to enhance education and create opportunities that are inclusive, sustainable, and impactful.
“The British Council, established in 1934 and operating in Nigeria since 1943, is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. The British Council works in over 100 countries to support education systems, empower teachers, and improve learning outcomes for young people.”
While emphasising that the MOU also marks the launch of the AMG-British Council Digital Teacher Academy, the senior officials of the two organisations maintained that the initiative will provide a three-tier certification covering modern pedagogy, assessment, and school leadership.
“Courses will be accessible on AMG’s learning platform, including on low-bandwidth devices, with a pilot cohort beginning in Q4 2025.
