Anambra community protests over outrageous electricity bills

EEDC

Residents of Ozalla Obasi community in Idemili North council of Anambra state have protested against outrageous estimated electricity billing by Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

The protesters numbering over 500 also expressed concerns over   harassment and intimidation by EEDC officials allegedly aided by the police in Onitsha.

Speaking during the protest, chairman, Ozalla Obasi Community Welfare Association, Mr. Chukwudi Mbanuzue, accused the EEDC of acting contrary to Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC order and the Onitsha High Court judgement with suit No. HID/279/2917, which ordered that EEDC should not bring electricity bills, disconnect their lights, intimidate or harass them until they provide Prepaid Meters for residents.

Mbanuzue noted that the disagreement with EEDC, dates back to 2016, when they had irregular electricity supply but were given outrageous monthly electricity bills, which residents were forced to pay.

He observed that the intention of the chairman of EEDC, Emeka Offor, was to ensure regular and affordable electricity supply to the people of the South East. However, lamented that the EEDC staff is frustrating his efforts, who has willfully refused to provide Prepaid Meters for consumers in the zone.

“We therefore call on Mr. Offor, to investigate our complaints, and order for the immediate release of Prepaid Meters to the residents of Ozalla Obasi community and other electricity consumers in the zone”, Mbanuzue added.
