The Nigerian Army confirmed on Thursday that a minor explosion, followed by a fire outbreak, occurred in the early hours of the day at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
According to a statement issued by Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the incident took place within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.
According to the statement, the localised blast, which happened in the morning of August 14, 2025, led to a fire outbreak inside the facility.
It noted that troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, working in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, swiftly responded to the emergency, successfully containing the flames before they could spread to other sections of the barracks.
The Army stressed that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.
According to preliminary reports, the damage was confined to the affected structure and certain stored materials.
“A detailed assessment is underway to determine the full extent of the material loss,” the statement read.
The Army urged residents of Ilese and surrounding communities to remain calm, assuring them that there was no cause for alarm.
The Army has already launched a thorough investigation, alongside other relevant agencies, to determine the precise cause of the explosion and to take measures to prevent a recurrence.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its personnel as well as members of neighbouring communities,” the statement added.
