To address the accommodation challenges faced by personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division, the outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major-General Jamal Abdussalam, has commissioned a new building and road project within the barracks.

The projects include a six-flat Officers Transit Accommodation and a 150-meter road. They were unveiled by the GOC on Wednesday, as part of activities marking the handing over and taking over ceremony at the 6 Division.

The building project, which was flagged off on 11 July 2024 by Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, the Late Chief of Army Staff(COAS), was named after him, and the Road, named after the current COAS, Major-General Olufemi Oluyede Street.

According to Maj-Gen Abdussalam, the Officers Transit Accommodation was built to provide temporary housing for officers, while the 150-meter road was constructed to open up a vast area of the barracks for further development.

“The accommodation problem in the barracks is a major challenge, and we have been working to address it. The new building and road will go a long way in easing the accommodation issues faced by our personnel,” Abdussalam said.

The GOC explained that the projects were part of the division’s efforts to improve the welfare of its personnel, adding that the division would continue to prioritize the needs of its personnel.

Also, the GOC unveiled the redesigned and reconstructed 6 Division python monument, which represents the division’s mascot, saying it symbolizes the motto of the Division Stealth and Adaptability.

The GOC, who gave the reason for the choice of the python as the Mascot for the Division, pointed out that the python is common in the division’s area of responsibility, and its characteristics align with the division’s motto.

He said: “For us in 6 Division, our Mascot is the python and we adopt the python because it is common in this our area of responsibility, and secondly it has some characteristics which the Division also seeks to emulate.

“Among those characteristics is the Stealth and Adaptability of the python which is the motto of this Division.”

The commissioning of the projects was witnessed by senior officers and personnel of the 6 Division, who hailed the GOC’s efforts in remodeling the barracks.
