The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Professor Epiphany Azinge (SAN), has commended the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and its alumni for sustaining a tradition of academic excellence and distinction.
The monarch gave the commendation when members of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Asaba Chapter, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Asaba, Delta State.
Describing UNILAG as a beacon of intellectual distinction, the Asagba urged alumni to continue projecting the institution as Nigeria’s foremost citadel of learning.
“Let the world see the worth of our training. Let the world proclaim that, yes, going to UNILAG is indeed going to the best university Nigeria can offer,” he said.
Professor Azinge, himself an alumnus, expressed pride in being part of the university’s legacy and its contribution to national development.
He noted that graduates of UNILAG bear a unique “emblem of distinction,” which continues to inspire emerging institutions such as Denis Osadebe University to pursue similar standards of excellence.
Offering prayers and blessings to the delegation, the monarch said: “My prayer is that the God of our ancestors will be with all of you. May you continue to grow from grace to grace, from glory to glory.”
He described Asaba as a city blessed with peace and rapid growth, calling it the “fastest growing city capital, not just in Nigeria, but in Africa south of the Sahara.”
President of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Asaba Chapter, Mr. Patrick Olisa Dibie, apologized for the delay in paying the courtesy visit and thanked the monarch for his warm reception.
He appealed to the Asagba to extend the same goodwill and support to the association as he has done for the legal profession, the church, and other national and international institutions.
Rt. Hon. Ovie Agas, a prominent member of the association, presented gifts to the Asagba and formally invited him to receive a national award from the UNILAG Alumni Association’s National Body at a ceremony scheduled for October 12, 2025, in Lagos.
The visit highlighted the shared commitment of the Asaba Chapter of the UNILAG Alumni Association to academic pride, cultural heritage, and the development of society, pledging continued support for the growth and prosperity of Asaba.
