Automotive council launches new curriculum for mechanics

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), has put in place new curriculum for teaching automotive mechanics, to keep pace with developments in the automotive industry.

The new curriculum includes-establishment of the Sector Skills Council (SSC), and completion of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for teaching automechanics up to level five of the National Vocational Qualification Framework (NVQF).

Others are the development of the corresponding curriculum and training of assessors and verifiers to ensure quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency, while giving room to access and progression from one level to the next.

Former Director-General of the NADDC, Engr. Aminu Jalal, who disclosed this yesterday, in Abuja in his keynote address at the Official Launch and Public Presentation of the NOS for the training and certification of automobile technicians in Nigeria, said the training of the nation’s mechanics has not kept pace with developments in the automotive industry, as the curriculum used for the federal Trade Test for automobile mechanics dates back to the 1960s.

‘’The council therefore, decided to develop a new curriculum, starting with a nationwide survey of the mechanics’ skills in 2008, the study focused on areas of competence, such as the technical knowledge of modern vehicles systems, troubleshooting diagnostic skills, and repair/maintenance skills and attitude.’’
