Body moves to tackle youth unemployment

Following revelation by the National Bureau of Statistics that 4.1 per cent of young people are jobless, the West Africa Vocational Education (WAVE) Initiative is maximising youths for better economies.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Molade Adeniyi, noted that the concept encourages employers to de-prioritise credentials and work experience as requirements for entry-level, while prioritising competencies and compatibility.

She added that diversity and inclusion are other critical factors organisations must consider when hiring.Adeniyi added: “It’s also essential to make sure that interviews are fair and inclusive. Offering flexible work arrangements such as remote work options or part-time positions can show that a company is willing to accommodate the needs of young job seekers.

“This flexibility can be necessary for young people, who want to continue their education or gain work experience, while managing other commitments.”
