Brace up for high cost of chickens at Yuletide, farmers tell Nigerians
The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), yesterday, charged Nigerians to brace up for higher cost of chicken, eggs and other poultry products during the yuletide.
Chairman of the Nigeria Poultry Show, an exhibition show of PAN, Dr. Olalekan Odunsi, gave the hint, yesterday, while speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta, shortly after the opening ceremony of this year’s edition.
Odunsi lamented that insecurity, high cost of animal feeds and exchange rate had forced some poultry farmers out of the business.
This, he said, had reduced number of poultry farmers producing chickens and other products to Nigerian consumers.
Odunsi, however, appealed to the Federal Government to ban exportation of soya beans and maize to allow farmers conserve for local use.
In their separate remarks, Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Adeola Odedina and his Ekiti counterpart, Olabode Adetoyi, expressed their states’ commitment towards improved production in livestock through Public Private Partnership (PPP) approach.
Odedina said the current administration was committed to working with poultry farmers to encourage mass production of livestock and eggs for export value-chain.
