One of the opposition parties in the country, the Labour Party (LP) Ebonyi, on Tuesday, encouraged Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State to invest more in agriculture and the building of industries, noting that if properly utilized, these sectors could tackle the economic hardship facing the state.

The Secretary of the Ebonyi State chapter of the party, Bar. Luke Adonwe, made the call in Abakaliki during an interaction with journalists. He noted that the level of hardship facing Nigerians demands that the government in power consider agriculture and industrialization as the mainstream for economic reforms and prosperity in the country today.

He described Ebonyi as a lucky state but said it only requires the government in power to channel its developmental policies and programs toward an agricultural revolution and the creation of industries in every part of the state.
Adonwe, the Ebonyi-born legal practitioner and human rights activist, observed that the state government, under the watch of Governor Nwifuru, has been implementing the manifesto it prepared for itself, known as the Peoples Charter of Needs agenda.

He added that the government of Ebonyi State is doing its best according to its manifesto, but its policies are so far versatile, with no clear justification for the good and bad ones.

“The only observation I have for now is that the government should see the need to address the rate of unemployment among Ebonyi citizens, especially the youths, and consider the establishment of industries in our dear state as a matter of urgency,” he noted.

He maintained that establishing industries in Ebonyi will create more job opportunities for the teeming population who are currently living without jobs, adding that another area the government should look at critically is agriculture.

He said, “For instance, we have policies in the Labour Party. Assuming we were the ones who got the gubernatorial ticket and won the election directly, we have a charter for agricultural revolution.

“The ‘Yahoo guys’ would have been turned into agrarian farmers; they would have been in the hinterlands producing food, championing production instead of embarking on consumption.

“I wish to advise the government in power, both at the grassroots, state, and national levels, to expedite action on all-inclusive agricultural programs for the benefit of humanity.”

He urged the government in power to focus on asphalting the rural and feeder roads instead of embarking on road dualization for easy movement and transportation of local products to urban areas for sales and income maximisation in the state.

The Labour Party scribe used the opportunity to congratulate his party faithful and supporters as they observed the yuletide and noted that the party officials have been working strategically to build a united front among themselves to claim notable elective positions come 2027.
