Bye-election: Kano police ban state-owned security outfits from polling units

The Police command in Kano disallowed participation of Kano state-owned security personnel from polling units across the three local government areas where the bye-election holds on Saturday.

Besides, the police command ordered restriction of movement essentially in the areas beginning 12:00 midnight of Friday the 15th to 6:00 pm of Saturday the 16th, August 2025, to ensure law and order.

The bye-election will hold in Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency to replace the late legislator and member of NNPP who died last. Similarly, a supplementary poll is being conducted at 10 polling units in Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency to conclude the earlier result.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on Thursday evening, said the ban on movement has exemptions for ambulances, fire service trucks, and vehicles of electoral officers and accredited election observers.

He said the command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, has put all necessary measures in place to ensure a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent re-run election.
“Access to polling units is for those eligible to vote. Only agents officially identified by INEC will be permitted at polling units. Also, carrying of weapons of any kind is strictly prohibited.
“Individuals wearing clothing or carrying items with political party logos or identities will not be allowed at polling units. Loitering in or around polling units will not be tolerated.
“State security outfits such as vigilante groups and KAROTA personnel will not be allowed at polling units. The command assures the public of its commitment to providing adequate security and maintaining peace throughout the electoral process.
“Security agencies will continue to remain apolitical, impartial, professional, neutral, and civil in the discharge of their duties, while residents of the affected LGAs and visitors alike are urged to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to ensure a smooth and hitch-free electoral process,” the police command said.
