Football competition was also organised between Government Senior Secondary School and Government Junior Secondary School, Tarkwa Bay.
The Federal Government recently disclosed that more than 76 million adults, representing 38 per cent of the nation’s estimated 200 million population, cannot read and write despite increasing efforts to improve literacy levels in the country.
Speaking at the event, Chipper Cash Marketing Campaign Manager, Goldie Iyamu, stated that education is the key that unlocks the world of possibilities, adding that football is now the world’s biggest sport with the ability to unite all human beings, irrespective of status or creed.
To him, football is a unique unifier that connects children’s love for learning as well as for the sport.
Continuing, Iyamu said education has been shown to significantly impact a child’s outcome, adding that many underprivileged kids lack the resources they need to aid their learning.
Specifically, he disclosed that “our team in Nigeria recently partnered with Executives Initiative in a community event dubbed ‘Chipping Away Illiteracy Through Football’, in Tarkwa Bay to award scholarships and give out ‘back to school essentials.”
He further said everyone deserves to be great, noting that education is the key that opens possibilities.
The football match ended 3-1 in favour of the Government Senior Secondary School.
Iyamu added that the initiative aims to target the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2,3,4 and 16.
The marketing manager disclosed that Tarkwa Bay was chosen because, in 2020, thousands of the community residents were displaced with no alternatives for support.
He noted that in a community where people lack basic amenities, it would be unimaginable the effects of the eviction on the children born out of and raised by this community.
Founder, Executives Initiatives, Dare Asobele said: “We are proud to partner with Chipper Cash to put smiles on the faces of these young stars and we hope to create a chain reaction of love that will promote collaboration and philanthropy.”
Expressing his appreciation, a teacher with Government Senior Secondary School, Mr. Okoolo Joseph, who spoke on behalf of the principal, acknowledged the effort of Chipper Cash and Executives Initiatives. He urged them to continue the commendable gesture and not rest on their oars.
